Richard W. Collins Maryland Department of the Environment Waste Management Administration 2500 Broening Highway Baltimore, MD 21224 Dear Mr. Collins, This letter is in regard to the Chesapeake Terrace Landfill being built in the area near Odenton, Crofton, and Gambrills in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. I am a resident of the area and am concerned about the environmental issues associated with the proposed landfill. I have been reading EPA's paper entitled Construction and Demolition Waste in Landfill's, dated February 1995. According to this paper, such landfills mainly contain wood products, asphalt, drywall, and masonry, with significant amounts of metal, earth, plastic, shingles, and insulation. They also contain materials classified as "hazardous" such as waste oil, grease, batteries, appliances, florescent bulbs, and formaldehyde from carpets and treated woods. All of these materials would be hauled and disposed of in our community. Bits, pieces, and fluids hauled through our area will inadvertently be spilled and blow in the wind from the trucks and landfill. My neighbors and I do not need this potential toxic environmental contamination in a residential area where we live and raise our children. The injustice of this environmental degradation of our local environment due to the construction of a rubble landfill in our residential area is unwarranted. For the past 10-years, Anne Arundel County and my community have been forced to "fight" the landfill within the judicial system and have done so unsuccessfully. As a resident and taxpayer of Maryland, I strongly urge you to DENY the issuance of a permit to the Chesapeake Terrace Rubble Landfill. Sincerely, cc: Governor Parris N. Glendening Senator Robert R. Neall Delegate Robert C. Baldwin Delegate Janet Greenip Delegate David G. Boschert County Executive Janet S. Owens County Councilman William D. Burlison County Councilman John R. Klocko
